Chapter Nine

Morgan Tyler, what can I do for ya?” the officer answered his desk phone, frustrated at yet another interruption.

“Officer Tyler, this is Bubba Chesterton. You got my brother Arlo locked up in your jail and the local guys here said that you wanted to talk to me, so here I am,” Bubba Chesterton drawled, sounding pleasant, but wary.

A hit of adrenaline shot through Morgan. He hadn’t expected a call from Bubba, but this could just be the break in the case that he needed, so he grabbed a pen from the coffee mug on his desk that held several of them, and brushed some files off of the top of his notebook.

“Great, Bubba, thanks for calling. I just have a few questions for you if you don’t mind.”

“No sir, that’s fine,” Bubba seemed more than agreeable.

“Perfect. Now is Bubba your actual name, or is that a nickname?” Morgan started out with something innocuous to put him at ease.

“My given name is George,” he chuckled. “But, ain’t nobody ever called me that. Not even my mama. I been just plain ole Bubba since I was knee high.”

“Okay, Bubba it is. Bubba, do you happen to have a houseguest right now named Carl Fanniker?”

There was a hesitation, then a sigh.

“Yessir,” Bubba answered finally.

“What’s the nature of your relationship with Mr. Fanniker?”

“Oh, it ain’t nothing like that. We ain’t got no relationship. I mean, that’s okay for other folks, it just ain’t how I roll, you know what I’m saying?”

Morgan rolled his eyes and tried again.

“What I meant was, how do you know Mr. Fanniker?” he clarified.

“Ohhh…I gotcha,” Bubba barked out a laugh. “He’s a buddy of my brother. Don’t seem too bright, but a nice enough guy, I s’pose.”

“When did he get to your place, Bubba?”

“He darn near scared me to death. He come knocking at my door around three o’clock Wednesday morning.”

“How sure are you about that time?” Morgan asked.

“Officer, when someone comes bangin' on your door in the middle of the night, the first thing you do is look at your phone to see the time, and mine said 3:07 a.m. I’m positive about that, cuz I said right out loud, ‘now who in the world is knocking on my door at this hour?’ I knew that Carl was gonna be dropping in, but I didn’t figure that he woulda drove straight through after Arlo got arrested.”

“Were you upset at him for leaving your brother?”

“No sir, I understood why he didn’t want to stick around, but I do think he’s a bad influence. My brother ain’t never been in no trouble like this before.”

“I see. Did Mr. Fanniker ever mention anything about what happened here before he left?”

“Just that he wasn’t doing nothing but eating his lunch, when Arlo up and tried to rob the barbeque place. Said the lady who ran it was quite a looker. I don’t believe him though. I think him and Arlo were in it together and Carl just tucked tail and ran, that’s what I think,” Bubba declared, clearly miffed.
